PIP has replaced Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is to help people who have a disability which affects their ability to carry out a range of everyday activities. PIP can be claimed by people who have a long–term disability or a condition that impacts on their ability to live independently.
The payment is based on an assessment of individual need which considers how the impairment affects the life of the individual and their ability to carry out a range of everyday activities. This replaces the previous system of awarding financial assistance just because of impairment.
There are no plans to replace DLA for children under 16 or for adults over 65 as of 8 April 2013.
